What is the difference with monorail?
One of major differences is the track structure. The monorail runs on one beam, while the Yurikamome carriage moves with 4 rubber-tired wheels just like a vehicle running on a highway.
※ A monorail is a rail-based transportation system, and there are two types – a straddle-beam monorail that runs over a concrete beam, and a suspended monorail in which a carriage with bogies is hung from a steel beam.
Why did you name it Yurikamome?
Yurikamome is a black-headed seagull with red bill and legs, a common denizen of Tokyo Bay. The seagul (miyako-dori) in the Sumida River, often depicted in Japanese waka poems, is believed to be this bird. Yurikamome was designated the Bird of Tokyo in 1965. Our transit system was named after this bird in hopes that people in Tokyo would remember the trains as a symbol of the Rinkai waterfront area.
When did the Yurikamome start service?
On 1st November, 1995.
At that time, although hotels in Odaiba and Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake were still under construction, Telecom Center Building had already been completed and MX TV (Tokyo Metropolitan Television Broadcasting Corp) was expected to open on 1st November, which we chose for the opening day.
How many trains run on the Yurikamome line in a day?
Between Shimbashi and Toyosu (14.7 km)
Departure station: Shimbashi → Toyosu 217 trains. Shimbashi → Ariake 13 trains. Ariake → Toyosu 4 trains.
Departure station: Toyosu → Shimbashi 208 trains. Ariake → Shimbashi 22 trains. Toyosu→ Ariake 13 trains.
Total: 477 trains
Departure station: Shimbashi → Toyosu 195 trains. Shimbashi → Ariake 7 trains. Ariake → Toyosu 4 trains.
Departure station: Toyosu → Shimbashi 191 trains. Ariake → Shimbashi 11 trains. Toyosu→ Ariake 8 trains.

Each station has an icon at each side of the station. What does that mean?
A station icon adopts a traditional pattern dating from the Edo period.
We believe that the modern structure, which usually evokes an unfriendly, industrial feel, can be combined with the traditional image using natural objects in order to bring out a heart-warming ambience.
How did you name the stations?
We named after the area and facilities for easier association.
The facilities, whose names are used in our stations, are mostly public entities symbolic of the area.
How long is the transit route?
The distance from Shimbashi to Toyosu station is 14.7 km.
What do you mean by the ‘new transit system’?
It is a fully automated transport system with rubber-tired trains running on the elevated tracks to transfer a medium volume of passengers.
Each carriage, measuring 9 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, has a capacity of 50 to 60 people. The system, using trains of six carriages, is capable of transporting 10,000 to 15,000 people one way per hour.
The eco-friendly system, which is driven by low-voltage power, also features rubber-tired vehicles providing low-noise and a smooth and comfortable ride. The steering wheels can make a automatic turn along a curve like other vehicles.
What are the features of this new transit system?
(1) The system, with little noise and vibration, produces no pollution such as gas exhaust.
(2) The train can drive safely on a sharp curve (a radius of 30m or more) and on a steep slope (an incline of 60 per mil or more).
(3) The elevated track can reduce land acquisition cost and the light-weighted, small-sized carriage can cut down on track construction cost.
(4) On-time service with shorter intervals is possible by utilizing computer controls.
(5) The unstaffed computer-backed control makes it possible to offer a flexible timetable including additional and all-night runs.
What is the advantage of unmanned driving?
With manually operated trains, we could not offer extra services in the case of a sudden increase in the number of passengers or when overnight trains are needed on New Year’s Eve.
With unmanned operation, as long as carriages are ready, we can flexibly prepare more trains. Travel time would be accurate, and passengers would not have to wait too long.
What do you manage the safety of unmanned operation?
All major machines and instruments used to control and monitor the train service have the multi-layered, failsafe configuration, and are unlikely to operate or display in error.
The Automatic Train Control (ATC) system and the Train Detection (TD) system are used to monitor the unmanned train just as in subways and the shinkansen. Among other systems used in the command office for constant monitoring are Automatic Train Operation (ATO), Station ATO Contoller, ATO Data Transmitters, etc.
The station platforms and concourse are entirely equipped with CCTV cameras for remote monitoring and supervision from the command office. In case of any anomaly, trains can be made to stop and staff can be sent to resolve the situation.
If there is malfunction in any of the ticket machines, ticket gate, elevators and escalators, the alarm message will be displayed in the monitoring device at the station and the command office.
