What is the definition of “child fare”?Open

It is a fare for passengers ranging from 6 to 12 years old.

Less than 1(toddler)・・・free
1 to 5(infant)・・・Two infants are free if accompanied by an adult or child. The third infant is subject to child fare if accompanied by an adult or child. An accompanied infant is subject to child fare.

12 or older(adult)・・・A 12-year-old attending primary school is a child.

Why is the ticket fare cheaper than the IC card fare between some stations?Open

The consumption tax was increased from April 01st, 2014. The “1 yen fare” was introduced for the IC cards to pass on this increase to the passengers accurately.

The tax excluded “IC card fare” is multiplied by 1.08, and the decimals are rounded off to the nearest one yen.

On the other hand, the tax excluded “Ticket fare” is multiplied by 1.08, and the digit in the ones place is rounded off to the nearest ten yen.

(The calculation of fractions as given above is based on “The handling policy for passenger fares of railways due to the increase in consumption tax, dated October 29th, 2013 (Manager, Railway Business, Railway Bureau, Land, Infrastructure and Transportation Ministry)”.)

The adult ticket fare (380 yen) when calculated using this method for the distances between 9 km to 15 km is 1 yen cheaper compared to the IC card fare (381 yen).

Note an identity card (such as driver’s license, passport, insurance card, and student identification card) is required to claim the refund.

Example: When a commuter pass with six months validity is used for one month and one day.
