On the east side of this station lies a disaster prevention & countermeasure headquarters for the central and local governments. In the event of a large-scale earthquake, this area will serve as a commanding centre and provides emergency medical support and transportation of relief materials.
The motif of this pattern is the mane of shishi, an imaginary animal which usually translates as a “lion” and is believed to have magical power to fend off evil.
There is a famous design that incorporates a combination of a lion and peonies, based on a legend that shishi favored peonies. This theme is portrayed in one of renowned Noh performances.
